The sensors installed in ‘forward-looking infrared’ cameras (as well as those of other thermal imaging cameras) use detection of infrared radiation, typically emitted from a heat source (thermal radiation), to create a ‘picture’ assembled for video output. FLIR is a great search and rescue tool for locating civilians in dense bushland, water or remote areas. Additionally, FLIR is a great firefighting tool with the ability to pinpoint hot spots after the fire front (not visible to the naked eye) has passed.
